Aunt's Advice!!

Last week i was chatting with my aunt about my studies and she gave me some advice. I am gonna share her advice with everyone by posting her advice here on my blog. Here goes....

mitchell wong: 2nd year degree

Ahyi kiah Tong: so how is it?

mitchell wong: so far so good

mitchell wong: but very hard to score

Ahyi kiah Tong: is it exam based?

mitchell wong: yup

mitchell wong: exam based

Ahyi kiah Tong: if it is partially exam based and the other part assignment based then you have to try to score in assignment lah

Ahyi kiah Tong: well, usually the higher percentage is taken from your last year

mitchell wong: ohh

mitchell wong: my one is both

mitchell wong: assignment plus exam

Ahyi kiah Tong: dont know the system in your uni but in UM each year contributes a certain percentage

Ahyi kiah Tong: the last two years contribute the higher percentage to your results

mitchell wong: ooo

Ahyi kiah Tong: thats why some people play around in first year

mitchell wong: my midterm ussually takes 15 percent

mitchell wong: then assignment is 35%

mitchell wong: final 50%

Ahyi kiah Tong: that is for the whole year

Ahyi kiah Tong: what i mean is at the end of your 3 years, all the results are collected together

mitchell wong: ooo

Ahyi kiah Tong: example 20% from 1st year, 30% from 2nd year

mitchell wong: then is different

mitchell wong: my one for 1 subject

Ahyi kiah Tong: and 50% from last year

Ahyi kiah Tong: you should check out how the scoring system is done

Ahyi kiah Tong: ah yi kiah did pretty well in final year thats why can get good results

mitchell wong: icic

mitchell wong: final year the subject is much more harder

mitchell wong: i even have to do a seminar

Ahyi kiah Tong: go check out how uni calculate your results for your whole degree

mitchell wong: okok

Ahyi kiah Tong: i think should be about the same idea

mitchell wong: icic

Ahyi kiah Tong: its always like that one

mitchell wong: yea...

Ahyi kiah Tong: they dont do average

mitchell wong: all uni same meh??

Ahyi kiah Tong: i would believe so because obviously last year is more difficult

Ahyi kiah Tong: so better take higher percentage from that year

Ahyi kiah Tong: first year easy so smaller percentage

mitchell wong: ooo

mitchell wong: okok

Ahyi kiah Tong: always give chance to students to play play and get used to it

mitchell wong: haha

mitchell wong: play play??

mitchell wong: where got time play play

mitchell wong: i one sem take 7 subject

Ahyi kiah Tong: so you should find out and put more effort these last few semesters

Ahyi kiah Tong: can help you get a better average

mitchell wong: ooo

mitchell wong: okok

Ahyi kiah Tong: for assignments sometimes they give the same papers

Ahyi kiah Tong: so check out the previous assignments especially get the good ones

Ahyi kiah Tong: then try to campur campur but do it cleverly so people dont say you copy

mitchell wong: but cannot copy

mitchell wong: ussually i find all the information on internet one

Ahyi kiah Tong: usually ah yi kiah read, understand and mix

Ahyi kiah Tong: but of course you want to know what the lecturer wants

mitchell wong: because i dont have any senior frenz here

Ahyi kiah Tong: hmmm

Ahyi kiah Tong: get from other coursemates

Ahyi kiah Tong: usually somehow it gets around

mitchell wong: icic

Ahyi kiah Tong: if got no choice you have to ask lor

Ahyi kiah Tong: even if you dont know them

mitchell wong: ya loo

mitchell wong: but until now all i do ownself lo

Ahyi kiah Tong: have you been doing well?

Ahyi kiah Tong: because sometimes internet wan is not well written

mitchell wong: the assignment can get marks but final exam very hard

Ahyi kiah Tong: you have to make sure then you get max marks from assignment lor

mitchell wong: yup yup

mitchell wong: thats the only way to make sure i pass the exam

Ahyi kiah Tong: you should also check out past years exam papers

mitchell wong: got got

Ahyi kiah Tong: got answers or not?

Ahyi kiah Tong: make short notes

mitchell wong: ussually no answer for past year

Ahyi kiah Tong: find lor

Ahyi kiah Tong: discuss with friends

mitchell wong: hard to find

mitchell wong: yup. got discuss with friends

Ahyi kiah Tong: sometimes you can try to answer then go see lecturer to find out if answer is correct

Ahyi kiah Tong: some lecturers are quite nice and might help you

mitchell wong: icic

mitchell wong: some la

mitchell wong: some dont even want to help

Ahyi kiah Tong: if you know got topic lecturer is teaching then maybe you can ask question in class

mitchell wong: oo

Ahyi kiah Tong: they got no choice but to answer lo

mitchell wong: sometime donno wat type of question want to ask

Ahyi kiah Tong: you dont have to tell them is past year question

Ahyi kiah Tong: check through past year exams

Ahyi kiah Tong: sometimes to ask silly question is also better than keep quiet and dont know anything

Ahyi kiah Tong: whenever dont understand must always ask

mitchell wong: ooo

Ahyi kiah Tong: sometimes people may think you are stupid or whatever lah but at least you understand cukup lah

mitchell wong: okok

Ahyi kiah Tong: if you want good results you have to try lots of things lor

Ahyi kiah Tong: nothing is impossible

mitchell wong: yup yup

Ahyi kiah Tong: last time in UM, ah yi kiah not very good in macroeconomics so always do study with a friend

mitchell wong: ooo

Ahyi kiah Tong: who take the same paper but different faculty

Ahyi kiah Tong: and in final year did quite well

mitchell wong: i also got do group study with friend one

Ahyi kiah Tong: make sure it is someone who is better than you

Ahyi kiah Tong: if not, a mixed group also good

Ahyi kiah Tong: so all learn from each other

mitchell wong: icic

mitchell wong: yeah

mitchell wong: got a lot clever student in my group

Ahyi kiah Tong: last time in teachers training college, ah yi join study group but because i can talk the loudest, they always keep quiet and agree so i cannot learn anything

mitchell wong: hahaha

mitchell wong: talk loud also wrong at

Ahyi kiah Tong: you must also make sure that your clever friends are willing to share

mitchell wong: yea

Ahyi kiah Tong: sometimes they also got their own motives

mitchell wong: ya looo

Ahyi kiah Tong: at most you have to always ask them

mitchell wong: but mostly my friend are willing to share cos we are together since diploma

Ahyi kiah Tong: sometimes is better to also mix with others

Ahyi kiah Tong: so have two study groups also good idea

Ahyi kiah Tong: for different subjects

mitchell wong: oo, but i always with the same group so never think of changing

Ahyi kiah Tong: hmmm

Ahyi kiah Tong: you all like girl lah

mitchell wong: cos since diploma ma

mitchell wong: hahaha

Ahyi kiah Tong: well, that is your choice lor

mitchell wong: 3 years plus dy group together

mitchell wong: haha

Ahyi kiah Tong: if it is not helping you much then you may have to think about changing isnt it

Ahyi kiah Tong: it would be good to mix with others as it helps you to build up your social skills which would be very important when you work next time

mitchell wong: yea

mitchell wong: my sosial skill still not so good

Ahyi kiah Tong: you have to be able to work together with other people

Ahyi kiah Tong: thats what employers want

Ahyi kiah Tong: because nowadays people work in teams

mitchell wong: icic

Ahyi kiah Tong: if you find it hard to mix then you may have a prob working in teams

Ahyi kiah Tong: because you know lah this world got so many types of people

mitchell wong: ihaha

mitchell wong: yup yup

mitchell wong: anyway ah yi kiah, i wanna go lunch already

Ahyi kiah Tong: ok
